The Sad State of Happiness and the Role of Digital Media among 8th, 10th and 12th Graders in United States

Happiness and life satisfaction among United States adolescents, which increased between 1991 and 2011, suddenly declined after 2012 has been reported in the 2019 report by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) at the United Nations. The report is outlines numerous indicators of low psychological well-being such as depression, suicidal ideation, and self-harm increased sharply among adolescents since 2010. This is evident with events that we see in schools. It is time that we take an innovative approach to look at the Happiness Index of school going children and start addressing things one at a time.

The report suggests a fundamental shift in how adolescents spend their leisure time. There has been the rise of digital media and everything since then in terms of happiness has fallen. Below graphics state the story:

Most of the analyses presented in the report is based on correlation, so they cannot prove that digital media time causes unhappiness. But it could be unhappiness is the cause of consuming digital media. The report focuses on United States but this is the trend in all countries be it developing or developed. We need to look at how we consume the digital media.  to our advantage. We are at cross roads where all communication even in the same house happens on apps and social media.

A strong focus is to be taken now on how we create a journey for our children where they use their imagination and have goals that will create their journey with purpose. We need to focus on increasing their happiness by cultivating habits and lifestyle that will create Passion | Process | Patience + Hunger | Humbleness | Honesty in the Happiness pH balance.
